Research & Development

A Strategic priority

Research and Development has always been a company strategic priority and a major focus for Sidem engineers. From detailed process parameters to materials selection and technology, permanent efforts are made to develop cost effective solutions based on advanced technologies for the benefit of our customers.
The advanced design solutions proposed by Sidem result from breakthrough in very specific areas which are key to the process performance and plant construction cost. Among others one can mention the following topics:

Thermocompressors performance calculation

The thermocompressors being the drive of MED-TVC plants, the control of their efficiency is a key factor to allow a contractual commitment on plant performance.
Years of R&D have been spent to fine-tune a proprietary numeric calculation code that gives indepth knowledge of thermocompressors supersonic flows and allow for an accurate prediction of their efficiency.

Spray nozzle development

Specific spray nozzles were developped for MED applications. They are corrosion resistant, not subject to clogging, they guarantee an evenly distributed make-up on top of the tubes bundles and their performance has been tested and verified under varying vacuum conditions. This achievement is key to MED systems reliability.

Tube Bundle Wetting and Dewetting

Wetting of tube bundles by sea water is a key condition to efficient heat exchange and avoidance of scale formation on the outside of the tubes.
On the bundle fluid motion mechanisms have been studied and modeled in order to define the design criterias to allow the size of tube bundles to be safely increased.

Material selection & testing

Sidem engineers are permanently reviewing the permanent progress made in materials and technology. When new materials or assemblies are selected, they are tested in desalination plants owned and operated by the Sidem group. The aim of these tests is to confirm the suitability of the material or the design with the desalination processes and confirm that they are suitable for operation over the design life time of the plant.
