Innovations in thermal desalination

SPRAY NOZZLE DEVELOPMENT

Specific spray nozzles were developped for MED applications. They are corrosion resistant, not subject to clogging, they guarantee an evenly distributed make-up on top of the tubes bundles and their performance has been tested and verified under varying vacuum conditions.

This achievement is key to MED systems reliability.

THERMOCOMPRESSORS PERFORMANCE CALCULATION

The thermocompressors being the drive of MED-TVC plants, the control of their efficiency is a key factor to allow a contractual commitment on plant performance.

Years of R&D have been spent to fine-tune a proprietary numeric calculation code that gives indepth knowledge of thermocompressors supersonic flows and allow for an accurate prediction of their efficiency.

TUBE BUNDLE WETTING AND DEWETTING

Wetting of tube bundles by sea water is a key condition to efficient heat exchange and avoidance of scale formation on the outside of the tubes.
On the bundle fluid motion mechanisms have been studied and modeled in order to define the design criterias to allow the size of tube bundles to be safely increased.

MATERIAL SELECTION & TESTING

Sidem engineers keep constantly up to date with the latest progress made in materials and technology. When new materials or assemblies are selected, they are tested in desalination plants operated by Veolia. The aim of these tests is to confirm the suitability of the materials or the design with the desalination processes and confirm that they are appropriate for operation over the design life time of the plant.
